Today, Apple announced it's quarterly earnings. With no big surprise they had another huge quarter. Mac sales are killing it, and the iPhone is doing well even though sales came slightly below what was forecasted. The one thing that has the internet buzzing is a quote from Steve Jobs. “The new products we are planning to release this year are very strong, starting this week with a major new product that we’re really excited about.”Apple never tips its hands. Never. The above quote doesn't confirm the fabled Apple Tablet is coming, but what else could it be? At this point if it isn't the tablet, no one will have a clue what is coming. Whatever the new product is, it has to be a world altering gadget considering Steve Jobs can't even keep a lid on it.
COO, Tim Cook was asked on the earnings call for a preview of what was in store for Wednesday and he responded. I wouldn't want to take away your joy of surprise for Wednesday when you see our latest creation. Apple clearly thinks they have a home run lined up. A few days ago I gave my thoughts on whats coming on Wednesday, and I think today's earning call makes things a bit clearer. There have also been rumors today that Apple would announce that the iPhone will be coming to additional carriers in the US. With the news from the earnings call today showing the iPhone sales fell short of expectations, I see this as an imperative for Apple. AT&T's network is a big detractor to a lot of potential customers. I really don't think the Verizon announcement will come Wednesday, but I could foresee Apple starting to sell unlocked phones like Google has been doing with the Nexus One. Alternately, Apple could also bring the iPhone to T-Mobile without any hardware changes. The switch to Verizon/Sprint would require a new iPhone handset with a Qualcomm chip. Apple clearly needs to do something to bring back momentum to the iPhone. So my prediction is a significant update to iPhone OS. Think iPhone OS 2.2 vs iPhone OS 3.0. Also, I think you'll be able to pick up unlocked iPhones on Apple.com and Apple retail stores. I haven't been this excited for an Apple event since the first iPhone launch. I can't wait to see what Apple has come up with, and I might be live-blogging the live-blogs. |
